Brioche Nebula Wrap
Please note: This pattern is part of the Treehouse Knits Traveling the Universe Advent this year and is listed at a higher price until the advent is over to remain exclusive to the advent. The price will be adjusted to the regular price of $11.00 CAD after Dec 26th 2025. Use the coupon you received as a part of the Treehouse Knits Traveling the Universe Advent Calendar to receive this pattern for free.
Note: The pictured sample is the Fingering Scarf using a selection of stash fingering weight minis. The DK scarf photos using the actual Treehouse Knits advent will be added once the advent is over to avoid spoilers.
The Brioche Nebula Wrap is a reversible 2-colour brioche wrap pattern that comes in 3 sizes and 2 weights. This wrap is written for both fingering and DK weight yarn, and with scarf (designed for 20 g minis), shawl (designed for 50 g skeins) and blanket (designed for 100 g skeins) size options. This shawl is designed in collaboration with Treehouse Knits Traveling the Universe Advent for December 2025. It is designed to be knit with 18 colours (9 pairs), but could easily be adapted to another number of colours! The simple rectangular construction of the wrap allows for the 2-colour brioche to really shine, but remain an easily adjustable and fairly beginner-level pattern.

Sizes:
Fingering Weight:
Scarf - approx. 70 inches / 175 cm length, 13 inches / 32.5 cm width
Shawl - approx. 72 inches / 180 cm length, 26 inches / 65 cm width
Blanket - approx. 72 inches / 180 cm length, 60 inches / 150 cm width
DK Weight:
Scarf - approx. 68 inches / 170 cm length, 13 inches / 32.5 cm width
Shawl - approx. 72 inches / 180 cm length, 26 inches / 65 cm width
Blanket - approx. 72 inches / 180 cm length, 60 inches / 150 cm width
Note: Size may vary a bit depending on the stretch of your yarn and tension of your knitting, but these are the rough sizes for the variations.
Needles recommended:
Fingering version: 3.75 mm / US 5 / UK 9
DK version: 4.5 mm / US 7 / UK 7
- 2-colour brioche requires circular needles (with a cord length a bit larger than the width of the size you choose to knit), as you need to be able to slide the stitches to the other end of the needles.
Note: You may need other size needles to match gauge.
Gauge (blocked):
In 2-colour brioche (see page 3), worked flat, and blocked.
Note: The row count listed in the gauge is for the visible rows of either MC or CC when looking at the respective side of the work. Due to the nature of 2-colour brioche knitting where each row is worked twice (once in each colour), the actual rows knit will be double the listed row count.
Fingering version: 21 sts x 22 rows = 4 x 4 inches / 10 x 10 cm
DK version: 15 sts x 18 rows = 4 x 4 inches / 10 x 10 cm
Note: Gauge is not as crucial for this pattern, but please note that if your gauge doesn’t match, the sizing of your scarf/shawl/blanket will be a bit off from the sizing listed above, and your yardage may vary.
If you are using handspun yarn that doesn’t quite match fingering or DK gauge, or wish to work the pattern in a different weight, you can work a swatch and find your own gauge, and then use your gauge measurements to calculate the required stitch and row counts to match the finished measurements.
Yarn recommended:
This pattern is designed for an 18-colour advent, divided into 9 sections with 9 colour pairs (1 variegated (main colour/MC) and 1 tonal (contrast colour/CC)). You could use a different number of colours and adjust the lengths of each section to match the final measurements. You could also use 1 colour for the MC and 9 colours for CC. If you alter the number of colours, you will need to ensure you have appropriate yardage to match the adjustments.
Fingering version:
18 colours of any fingering weight yarn that you can match gauge with (recommended 9 variegated and 9 tonal). The recommended yarn is from the Treehouse Knits Traveling the Universe Advent in the Spruce Sock base (90% superwash merino, 10% recycled nylon, 437 yds / 400 m per 100 g).
DK version:
18 colours of any DK weight yarn that you can match gauge with (recommended 9 variegated and 9 tonal). The recommended yarn is from the Treehouse Knits Traveling the Universe Advent in the Dogwood DK base (90% superwash merino, 10% recycled nylon, 246 yds / 225 m per 100 g).
Yardage recommended:
Fingering version - Scarf (20 g minis):
Total yardage - approx. 325 g (1420 yds / 1298 m)
Yardage per colour (x18) - between 16 and 19 g, average of 18 g (79 yds / 72 m)
Fingering version - Shawl (50 g skeins):
Total yardage - approx. 655 g (2862 yds / 2617 m)
Yardage per colour (x18) - between 34 and 38 g, average of 36 g (157 yds / 144 m)
Fingering version - Blanket (100 g skeins):
Total yardage - approx. 1510 g (6599 yds / 6034 m)
Yardage per colour (x18) - between 82 and 86 g, average of 84 g (367 yds / 336 m)
DK version - Scarf (20 g minis):
Total yardage - approx. 325 g (797 yds / 729 m)
Yardage per colour (x18) - between 16 and 19 g, average of 18 g (44 yds / 40 m)
DK version - Shawl (50 g skeins):
Total yardage - approx. 695 g (1710 yds / 1564 m)
Yardage per colour (x18) - between 36 and 40 g, average of 38 g (94 yds / 86 m)
DK version - Blanket (100 g skeins):
Total yardage - approx. 1600 g (3936 yds / 3600 m)
Yardage per colour (x18) - between 87 and 91 g, average of 89 g (219 yds / 200 m)
Note: Yardage/weight varies between different fingering/DK weight yarns, so if you are using yarn with a different yardage/gram ratio, make sure to calculate based on the yardage, not the weight. If you are using a different number of colours for your fade, you can divide your total estimated grams/yardage by the number of colours to get approximately how much to knit in each colour. If you are using 1 single MC with 9 CCs, you will need 9 times the single colour yardage for your MC.
