Naturally dyed yarn kits are available from the Midgaards Have Etsy Store.

The Brisingamen Hat is constructed by making two provisional cast ons. Knitting from the first of them, a lined hem is created. The lacy outside of the hat is knit from this hem. Later, the second provisional cast on is used to knit a full lining.

The end result is a hat that consists of double fabric everywhere. The lace part, knit in the excellent (but not that soft) Norne 1-ply wool shows on the outside, while only the inside hem and lining, knit in wonderfully soft Bestla 2-ply silk-merino, touches the skin. Of course, the construction in two thin layers also makes the hat very lightweight, but warm.

Different parts of the hat have different gauges:

Twisted rib (k1 tbl, p1) in Norne, knit on a 2.5 mm (US 1 1⁄2) needle: 26 sts x 12 rnds = 10 x 2.5 cm (4 x 1 inches).

Lace pattern in Norne, knit on a 3 mm (US 21⁄2) needle: 32 sts x 36 rnds = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches).

Stockinette stitch in Bestla, knit on a 2.5 mm (US 11⁄2) needle: 27 sts x 43 rnds = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches).

Materials needed:
50 g (1.76 oz) Midgaards Have Norne, 100% wool, 600 m / 100 g (700 yd / 3.53 oz).
50 g (1.76 oz) Midgaards Have Bestla, 35% silk, 65% merino, 600 m / 100 g (656 yd / 3.53 oz).

PS: In Norse mythology, Brisingamen is the fertility goddess Freya’s fiery gold necklace. It was forged by four dwarves, and if you’re interested in knowing which payment they demanded, I suggest you Google it yourself!
