This adorable baby cardigan is worked mostly in a simple textured stitch pattern with a single color, with just enough colorwork to make it interesting. The body is worked flat from the bottom up, separating the back and two fronts at the underarm. The sleeves are worked in the round and sewn on, but could easily be picked up and worked top-down. The button and buttonhole bands are one piece with the ribbing and collar edge, without seams. The fit is generous and similar to traditional Nordic ski sweaters. Note that the sample pictured is a 9-12 month size worn by a 9-month old baby.

You will learn some great finishing details that will be useful on many projects - simple integrated button band, neat buttonhole without wonky gaps, neat shoulder and sleeve seaming, all with photo tutorials in the “bonus illustrations” file.

Yarn: Fingering or sock weight, preferably washable.

Yards as follows for 3-6, 6-9 (9-12, 12-18) mos.:
Main color (MC) 475, 535 (605, 690)
Trim color (TC) 130, 140 (150, 160)
Contrast color 1 (CC1) 14, 14 (15, 16)
Contrast color 2 (CC2) 14, 14 (15, 16)

Meters as follows for 6-9 (9-12, 12-18) mos.:
Main color (MC) 435, 490 (555, 635)
Trim color (TC) 120, 130 (135, 145)
Contrast color 1 (CC1) 13, 13 (14, 15)
Contrast color 2 (CC2) 13, 13 (14, 15)

Gray/blue/green sample is knit in Wollmeise Pure: Q.E.D. (MC), Mont Blanc (TC), Sabrina (CC1), and Schwefel (CC2); size 9-12 months modeled by a 9 month old baby.

Wollmeise Twin works equally well. Note that your gauge may be slightly larger, i.e., the sweater will be slightly wider at the same stitch count. The good thing is - babies grow!

Kits for Brookline Baby are available from Rohrspatz & Wollmeise in several beautiful colorways!
The Wollmeise Kits for Brookline Baby are available only in Twin, and for the 3-6, 6-9 and 9-12 month sizes.

Each kit consists of:
Main color (MC) 150 g skein (466.5 m) + 50 g Birdie (155.5 m)
Trim color (TC) 50 grams = 155.5 m
Contrast color 1 (CC1) 30 grams = 93.3 m
Contrast color 2 (CC2) 30 grams = 93.3 m

Other yarns to consider: Any soft and washable fingering / sock weight yarn in which you can come close to achieving the gauge will work. You could consider: CaMaRose Yaku 4/16, Dale Baby Ull, Karabella Aurora 4, Miss Babs Yummy 2-Ply. All of these are baby-soft.

Solid or semi-solid colors work best for the main and trim colors. Variegated yarns can work well as contrast colors as long as they contrast enough not to get lost. Note that CC1 appears with the MC, and CC2 appears with the TC.

Buttons: 5 buttons, 5/8” (16 mm), with shank
