Brownie Tartan Mosaic
This tutorial will teach you how to crochet 2 types of 4 colour tartan mosaic in a 12 page pdf full of written instructions, charts and process photos. I also included a paler version of the charts so that you can print out and draw over it with your own colours.
It is worked in overlay crochet technique with 4 contrasting colours. Overlay stitches are made in front loops, so there is no chains behind them. Each row is made using a single colour and you will have the loose ends to deal with, unless you are working on a circular object like a cushion.
The pattern repeats in sets of 16 stitches and 22 rows (with 16 rows variant included). You will need yarn of the same weight in 4 contrasting colours and the hook sized to your yarn. These 2 designs would make a very pretty blanket or rug by just following the instructions with your preferred size in mind. Cushion cover or a bag would also look great with it. Scarf is possible, but keep in mind that the tartan pattern will appear on the front of the work, and the back would have rows of colour stripes instead as you can see on the photos.
Stitches used (US terms): sc, FLdc, Stkd (stacked stitch is what I came up with to make it possible for the mosaic to have 4 different colours on the same level, it is explained in the tutorial with photos and text)
Even if you are not a very experienced crocheter, abundance of photos, detailed written instructions and charts would make for a very fun project.
I named this tartan Brownie (household elf/spirit) because a Brownie living in your home needs their own house tartan – and you decide what colours go into it. Also the shape kind of reminds me of a tray of brownies ;)…
I’d love to see the colours that you choose for your Brownie Tartan, if sharing on insta or fb - please feel free to tag me (FB: Tanya’s charming creatures, IG @tanyabondart)
I have include printer friendly version of the pdf that has almost no images other than the charts.
Relative colour amounts:
The total amount of yarn will depend on the size of your project, but here are the ratios of the colour usage for tartan A:
C1 (black) - 2.5
C2 (yellow) - 1
C3 (navy) - 2.5
C4 (sky blue) - 1.5
Ratios for tartan B:
C1 (cacao) - 3
C2 (gray) - 1
C3 (pink) - 2.5
C4 (white) 1
