Brunelleschi is the second pattern in my series “Archiknits”.

Filippo Brunelleschi was the mastermind behind the Florence cathedral dome. When construction began on the cathedral in 1296 no one yet knew how to construct the dome. 122 years later Brunelleschi comes along and saves the day. This toque is a tribute to the ingenious load bearing brick structure with its herringbone pattern of standing bricks holding the other bricks in place while the mortar sets.

The toque is knit bottom up, beginning with a rib brim and cables that continue all the way to the top. The cables include some fun and nifty ones with decreases and increases in the cable. Some of them might seem a bit tricky, or even daunting, but the pattern itself is clearly visible on the toque and should become obvious after a couple rounds. Just go with Pippi Longstocking’s philosophy of “I haven’t tried this before, so I’m sure I’ll manage!” and you will be just fine.

Knitting in the round, knit, purl, cables, purl increase, decreases

Size
Approximately for a head with a circumference between 52 and 60cm (20.5 - 23.6”). Adjust the size to your liking by changing needle size and/or yarn.

Gauge
25 sts over 33 rows in pattern = 10 by 10cm (4”)

Material
3.5 & 4 mm (US 4 & 6) DPN’s or circular needles for magic loop, or 3.5 & 4 mm (US 4 & 6) 40 cm (16”) circular needle and 4 mm (US 6) double point needles.

Filippo Brunelleschi blev den som till slut kom på en lösning på problemet domen över katedralen i Florens. När katedralprojektet inleddes 1296 var det ingen som visste hur en så stor dom skulle konstrueras. 122 år senare kom Brunelleschi och räddade dagen. Den här mössan är en hyllning till den geniala lösningen med stående tegelstenar som håller de liggande på plats medan hela den bärande konstruktionen härdar.

Mössan stickas från resåren upp, med 8 större flätor som klättrar rakt upp och ett antal mindre som svänger sig upp mellan dem.
Vissa av flätorna kan verka lite kluriga, eller rent av skrämmande. Men mönstret blir strax tydligt och om du tänker på Pippis kloka ord “Det har jag aldrig provat tidigare, så det klarar jag helt säkert.” så kommer det att gå fint!
