Inspired by the Eric Carle’s classic children’s book, The Very Busy Spider, this sweet friend brings cuddly fun to the story. I created this pattern to gift to a child with the matching book. I bet these would be amazing sellers at markets too!

Size:
Approx. 12” long using bulky weight yarn; however, the size of the spider can be adjusted using other weight yarn and the recommended hook size for that yarn.

Skill Level:
Moderate

Stitch Abbreviations:

Chain (ch)
Half double crochet (hdc)
Half double 2 together (hdc2tog)
Single crochet (sc)
Single crochet decrease (scdec)
Single crochet increase (scinc)
Slip stitch (sl)
Stitch/stitches (st)

Materials Needed:
6 mm (US size J) crochet hook, or any size to match the thickness of your yarn.

Small amounts of bulky yarn. Finding appropriate colors is the most difficult part of this pattern, so be creative! You can use any fiber, and any number of strands held together to create an appropriate thickness for your hook. I found using two different colors held together gave the spider a natural speckled look. Colors needed: red, blue/green, brown, and a scrap light blue.
I used:
Red: one strand each Caron One Pound Claret and one strand Bernat Premium Red, (both worsted weight) worked together
Blue: Two strands Red Heart Super Saver Stripes in Cool Stripe (worsted weight) worked together
Brown: I strand Bernat Wave Length Orange Sodalite (bulky weight)
10mm black safety eyes
Polyester (or other fiber) stuffing
Tapestry needle to weave in ends
