This edging from 1892 Butterick Publishing’s The Art of Knitting, p. 44, no. 55, starts with 23 stitches, slowly increasing to 28 stitches before returning to 23. There are 20 pattern rows. The 10 wrong-side rows are identical and almost all purl stitch.
The sample is 3.25 inches wide at its widest point at stated gauge and after blocking.

Skills needed: long-tail cast on, slip, knit, purl, yarn over, k2tog, k3tog, SK2P (slip1, k2tog, PSSO) and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able thread/yarn will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.

9 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make about 3 inches of blocked edging in the stated gauge.
