The poncho in the picture is knit from hand spun, Shetland wool, 2 ply, chunky weight. The Shetland makes it very lightweight, and super warm. You can use any chunky weight yarn.

Pattern requires minimum of 450 yards chunky weight yarn and size 15 needles.
