I designed this for an intermediate knitter who has no experience with cables. I test-knitted the pattern in a light worsted weight yarn and in DK yarn. Both work well.

A tam is a hat with extra room from the brim to the crown. It is traditionally knitted in a wool fiber so it can be blocked on a dinner plate. Because synthetic fibers do not permit the cables to lay flat after blocking, I do not recommend them for this pattern. It is also very important to check your gauge after blocking. A firm yarn will produce better results than a very soft yarn.
