The Cafe Socks DK are a simple almost-vanilla sock pattern, featuring a heel flap and gusset construction and an all-over rib pattern that extends through the heel flap.

Suitable for DK weight sock yarn, this pattern makes for great house socks or boot socks.

Size Selection

Baby/Toddler (Child, Adult A, Adult B, Adult C) with finished foot circumferences of 5 (6.5, 7.25, 8, 9.5)” / 12 (16.5, 18, 20, 24) cm. Select size based on 10% negative ease, rather than by age.

Finished leg length: 2.5 (4.75, 5.25, 5.5, 6.25)” / 6.5 (12, 13, 14, 16) cm, adjustable.

Finished foot length: 4.25 (7.75, 8.5, 9.25, 10.5)” / 10.5 (19.5, 20, 23, 26.5) cm, adjustable.

Gauge

22 stitches and 34 rounds = 4 x 4” / 10 x 10 cm in stockinette stitch in the round with Needle A.

Yarn Selection Yardage

DK weight yarn in the amounts of 140 (150, 170, 250, 350) yds / 130 (140, 155, 230, 320) m.

Adult A size sample shown in Zauberball Starke 6 (75% Wool, 25% Biodegradable Nylon / 150 g / 437 yards / 400 meters / Superwash / 2-ply).

Child sample shown in A Knitter’s Homestead DK Organic Merino Superwash Sock (80% Superwash Merino / 20% Nylon / 100 g / 246 yards / 224 meters / Superwash / 4-ply).

Choose a sturdy nylon blend for strength, or any multi-ply DK weight for comfortable bed socks.

Needles

A (Main Fabric): US 3 / 3.25 mm DPN’s, small circulars, or long circulars for magic loop.

B (Ribbing): US 2.5 / 3 mm DPN’s, small circulars, or long circulars for magic loop.

If knitting with small circulars, an additional set of DPN’s or long circulars will be required. Needle B should achieve rib that matches main fabric gauge. In 1x1 rib, this may require that you go down one more size.

Construction Notes

• A popular substitution is holding 2 strands of sock weight yarn together. Knit top down with heel flap and gusset construction.

• An optional contrast color may be used in the heel and toes.

• Techniques include knitting, purling, heel flaps, short row heel turn, picking up from an edge, and decreases.

• This pattern is suitable for first time sock knitters.
