He can fit nicely in your hands. Knit him in red tones for a classic look, or blue if he may have recently had a bucket of water thrown over him. Knit him in pink if you like or rainbow colours.
Using DK yarn I would suggest needles around the 3.25mm - 3.5 mm range, and the amount of yarn required is minimal, 1 50g ball of each colour used could easily make many calcifers - use them to store hearts prior to eating if that’s your thing.
