The Calypso Socks is a DK weight sock pattern using the simple seed stitch for a little bit of texture. The socks are knit cuff down, with a heel flap and gusset, and an anatomical toe. They are knit in 1x1 ribbing for the cuff, and then simple seed stitch for the main sock, with stockinette on the bottom of the foot and for the toe. The pattern is designed for a contrast cuff, heel and toe, but has the option for the heel to be worked in the main colour if preferred.

Sizes Offered:
-measurement is the circumference around the ball of the foot (rounded to the nearest 0.25 inch/0.5 cm)

X-Small: ~7 inch circumference (unstretched), can stretch to fit up to about 8/8.5 inches
Small: ~7.75 inch circumference (unstretched), can stretch to fit up to about 8.5/9 inches
Medium: ~8.25 inch circumference (unstretched), can stretch to fit up to about 9/9.5 inches
Large: ~9 inch circumference (unstretched), can stretch to fit up to about 9.5/10.5 inches
X-Large: ~9.75 inch circumference (unstretched), can stretch to fit up to about 10.5/11.5 inches

Note: These measurements are based on my sample piece; yours may vary slightly depending on gauge and tension. Please choose a size where the measurement of the circumference of the ball of your foot falls within the unstretched-stretched range. A rule of thumb that I have seen is that a sock should be made with about 15-20% negative ease (eg. my foot circumference is 8.5 inches / 21 cm, I would want a sock that has about 6.75-7.25 inch / 17-18 cm circumference, so I would knit the XS). The length of the socks is customizable based on your foot length, so only base your size on the foot circumference.

Needles recommended:
3.25 mm / US 3
Cord length at least 32-40 inches / 80-100 cm for magic loop method. You can use 9 inch / 22.5 cm circulars or DPNs instead if you wish, though the pattern is written for magic loop.

I use Kollage Soft Cable Circulars for Magic Loop knitting and they are amazing!

Note: You may need other size needles to meet gauge.

Gauge (blocked):
Simple seed stitch, in the round:
4” x 4” (10 x 10 cm) = 24 sts x 32 rounds

1 x 1 ribbing, in the round:
4” x 4” (10 x 10 cm) = 24 sts x 40 rounds

Note: If your stitch gauge is correct but your row gauge is off a little, you’ll be ok, because you will be customizing the number of rounds used anyway to match the length of your foot.

Yarn recommended:
This design is intended to be worked with DK yarn (you could also use fingering weight yarn held double). The pattern is designed with a DK sock set, with the main body of the sock knit in the variegated full skein Main Colour (MC), and the cuffs, heel and toes knit in the tonal mini Contrast Colour (CC).

Note: Most sizes will need more yardage for the CC than comes in a single DK sock set, unless the set comes with 2 minis. You can work the heel in the MC if you wish to save on CC yardage.

I used Pasley Knits - Cove DK (90% extrafine superwash merino, 10% recycled nylon, 246 yds / 225 m per 100 g ball) for my sample, in the colourways Anemone (MC) and Forget Me Not (CC).

Yardage recommended:
Yardage/weight varies between different DK weight yarns, so if you are using yarn with a different yardage/gram ratio, make sure to calculate based on the yardage, not the weight. I have also indicated how much CC is used specifically for the heel in case you wish to switch the heel to MC, or increase ribbing length, etc.

Note: Yardage estimates below are the yardage required for both socks. If you are using fingering weight yarn held double, you will need double the yardages listed below.

X-Small: ~52 g / 123 yds / 113 m of MC, ~20 g / 49 yds / 45 m of CC (~9.5 g / 23 yds / 21 m for heel)
Small: ~61 g / 150 yds / 137 m of MC , ~23 g / 57 yds / 52 m of CC (~11 g / 27 yds / 25 m for heel)
Medium: ~68 g / 167 yds / 153 m of MC , ~26 g / 64 yds / 59 m of CC (~13 g / 32 yds / 29 m for heel)
Large: ~78 g / 192 yds / 176 m of MC , ~30 g / 74 yds / 68 m of CC (~15 g / 37 yds / 34 m for heel)
X-Large: ~87 g / 214 yds / 196 m of MC, ~35 g / 86 yds / 79 m of CC (~17.5 g / 43 yds / 39 m for heel)

Note: Yardage is an approximation. I have included a fair bit of foot length for each size so this should accommodate all foot lengths. If you have extremely long feet, I would go with a little extra yardage just to be safe!
