Calypte is a striking, nature-inspired shawl designed to capture the shimmering beauty and movement of the Anna hummingbird.
Originally created for a special Small Business Saturday collaboration, this design celebrates color, texture, and the artistry of indie-dyed yarn. Flowing stitch patterns and thoughtfully placed details echo the flicker of wings and the delicate energy of a hummingbird in motion.
The shawl begins with a top-down triangle, shaped with gentle yarn-over increases. From there, “wings” are worked outward along each side, creating a dynamic, sculptural silhouette. Stitches are then picked up to unify the piece, forming a cohesive body that flows naturally from center to edge. A polished i-cord bind-off provides a clean, elegant finish.
Despite its striking appearance, Calypte is designed to be an engaging and approachable knit, with intuitive construction and rhythmic sections that make it easy to settle into the process.
Whether you choose bold, high-contrast colors or soft, shifting hues, this shawl is designed to let your yarn take flight.

Materials needed:
Yarn: Approx. 140g; 645 yds (590m) fingering weight yarn
Main Color: 276 yds (255m)/60g
Four (4) Contrasting Colors each 92 yds (85m)/20g
This pattern is great for using leftover (sockyarn) scraps for the contrasting colors.

Designed as a special project, using K&L Fiber Mini Simple Sock Skeins (75% superwash merino/25% nylon) 92 yds (85m)/20g: 3 mini-skeins for Main Color (all same color);
4 Contrasting Colors

Needles: US 5 (3.75mm) 40” circular needle (or needle size required to obtain gauge)
Notions: Stitch marker(s), Darning needle, waste yarn or stitch holder

Pattern Notes:
This shawl starts with a top-down constructed triangle and a single stitch with yarn-over increases along each edge, and finished with some short row shaping.
Next you will pick up and work “wings” into the yarn over increases along each side of the triangle.
To work the rest of the body, you pick up stitches along the sides of the wings and the live stitches from the center triangle.
Finish off this shawl with a decorative icord cast off.
The pattern is written using four contrast colors and one Main Color, however, you can use as many or few contrasting colors as you wish. This pattern is great for using leftover (sockyarn) scraps.
