This is a top-down stockinette jumper with a 1x1 ribbed hem, neckline and cuffs, all finished with a rolled edge detail. Knitters can choose in this pattern to follow instructions for a back piece shaped with German short rows, or just for neckline shaping. Both necklines feature a wide increase point for an added detail. There are also options for a wide or tapered sleeve, as well as ‘cropped’ or ‘full length’ body lengths.

In the version without short rows, the back is cast on and knitted down to the under arm depth. Stitches are then picked up along either shoulder and worked up and over the shoulder point, then down to the under arm point on the front with the neckline shaped by decreases and increases, and stitches cast on at the front neckline. The pieces are connected in the round with stitches cast on under the arm, and knitted in the round to the bottom hem. The sleeves are picked up later and knitted completely in the round.

In the version with short rows, the back is cast on and shaped with short rows, then knitted down to the under arm depth. Stitches are then picked up along either shoulder and worked down the front while increases shape the neckline, and some stitches cast on for the front neck. This joined front piece is knitted down to the under arm. The pieces are connected in the round with stitches cast on under the arm, and knitted in the round to the bottom hem. The sleeves are picked up later and knitted completely in the round.

EQUIPMENT:

Recommended needle size - 5mm circular needles for stockinette (I knit the whole thing on 100cm cables and use magic loop for the sleeves, but this is personal preference)
4mm circular needles for ribbing
Yarn needle (to weave ends)
Scissors / embroidery scissors
Blocking mats
Wool wash (optional)
2 clip stitch markers (optional to mark German short rows on back panel)

GAUGE:

18 stitches x 26 rows (in back and forth stockinette) for 4 x 4 inches / 10 x 10 cm

SIZES:

There is an intended 11 inches of positive ease, and finished garment measurements are for after blocking. For busts smaller than 30 inches there will be more positive ease. For busts larger than 66 inches there will be less positive ease.

Both samples were knitted holding 2 strands of Rowan Island Blend Fine together.
