Carinthia, found in the Austrian Alps, is a place of majestic mountains and lakes. In winter, swirling snow dances across frozen landscapes. This colorful cowl, with its doubled-thickness, is just the thing to keep the chill at bay.

Join the KAL, happening now in my Ravelry group. This leisurely knitalong will run from October 1 - December 31, 2014. Prizes will be awarded at random to participants posting their finished projects to Ravelry with photos by the deadline.

Finished measurements
Height: 8”/20.5 cm
Circumference: 21”/53.5 cm

Yarn
Worsted weight yarn in two colors; a minimum of 200 yds each. Shown in Orange Flower Yarns MCN Worsted 80% Superwash Merino; 10% Cashmere, 10% Nylon; 200 yards/182 m. MC: Poseidon, 1 skein; CC: Vivid Aquamarine, 1 skein.

Samples were knit from Orange Flower | MCN Worsted and The Plucky Knitter Primo Worsted. In testing, nearly all of the main color yarn was used, with just a few yards remaining. (The main color is the darker yarn in the pattern photos.) It is highly recommended to purchase a second skein of the main color to avoid running out.

Additional Materials

  • US #6/4.0mm, US #7/4.5mm 24” circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers (8 total, with one unique)
  • Smooth waste yarn for provisional cast-on, if desired.

Techniques used

  • provisional cast-on
  • stranded knitting
  • picot hem
  • Kitchener stitch seaming in the round

Worked in one piece from a provisional cast-on, this fun, two color cowl knits up quickly, and, with the worsted weight yarn and lined interior, would make an excellent choice for a first Fair Isle project.
