This unique piroque-shaped garter stitch brim design features pointed earflaps with optional loops for tassels, braids, or buttons, while super bulky yarn and large needles make for quick construction. Earflaps can be left to dangle with decorative tassels, pompoms, or braids, fastened under chin for extra chilly weather, or pulled to the rear for a cloche-style look.
Several advanced knitting techniques are introduced in small quantities with clear, precise directions and illustrations. The purl stitch brim encourages use of Portuguese-style knitting, both to reduce hand fatigue and learn new techniques. Wrapped half rows are employed to shape sides of brim, and a 6-stitch length of garter grafting joins the brim into a vesica piscis (a football shape).
Double pointed needles are recommended while knitting the crown; circular needle and magic loop method can be used, but is not ideal for this project since moving the stitches from cable to needle is cumbersome with super bulky yarn and a maximum of only 44 stitches. Additionally, the fixed diameter of double pointed needles aid in holding consistent stitch size and tension while the spaces between them serve as section dividers, eliminating the necessity of stitch markers.
