About the Pattern

Settle in for this mystery within a mystery — one crime, eight suspects!

Who ate all the cat treats?

A crime has taken place, and each week you’ll be introduced to a cat suspect as each piece of the scarf is revealed and you try to figure out who is the feline culprit!

Double knit, the scarf is fully reversible, featuring opposite color schemes on each side. The design is somewhat similar in layout to several of my other MKAL scarves. Solid colors or yarns with subtle or gradual color changes work best. If you want to use up scraps, you could even use a different set of colors for each of the 8 cats.

The finished size of the scarf is approximately 71 inches (180 cm) in length and 5.5 inches (14 cm) in width. The colorwork for the design is chart only, not written instructions.

Yarn
• Approximately 465 yards (425 m) each of two contrasting colors of fingering weight yarn.

Needles
• Size 2 US (2.75 mm) needles for everything except the cast on.
• Optional: Size 1 US (2.25 mm) needles for a neater cast on edge.

Notions
• Needle to weave in ends.

About the MKAL

What is a Mystery Knit a Long (MKAL)? An MKAL is when the pattern is broken up into a series of clues or parts. What the final piece looks like is a mystery until all the parts have been received.

Cat Whodunit MKAL will begin on August 20 and run for 8 weeks with new clues sent each Thursday. Additionally, participants in the MKAL will be entered into a drawing (read more below).

Schedule
Week 1: August 20
Week 2: August 27
Week 3: September 3
Week 4: September 10
Week 5: September 17
Week 6: September 24
Week 7: October 1
Week 8: October 8

Please note that prior to August 20, you will only receive information about the pattern, such as yarn and gauge, and not the full instructions. The first clue will be sent on August 20 when the MKAL starts, with new clues sent every Thursday. The full pattern will be released at the end of the last week of the MKAL (October 15).

Before the MKAL starts on August 20, you’ll also receive the beginning of the short mystery story that accompanies the MKAL. More will be revealed each week, and the answer to the mystery will be given at the end of the last week when the full pattern is released.

If you are new to double knitting, I recommend trying out the technique before the MKAL starts. Try a double knit potholder, such as my Cat Playtime Potholder pattern or any of my other free double knit patterns. I also have a double knitting tutorial that covers casting on, binding off, edging, and reading basic charts: Double Knitting Tutorial.

Join or visit the Nifty Knitter Designs group on Ravelry to see progress photos of what the scarf should look like during the MKAL, share your project photos with other knitters, or discuss this or any of my other patterns.

Enter to WIN!
Any knitter who creates a project on Ravelry with pictures of their scarf and completes at least 50% of the scarf by the time the MKAL finishes on October 15 will be entered into a drawing. Three lucky winners will get $10 to spend in my Ravelry store.

For spoiler reasons, please do not use project photos as the first photo in your project until the final MKAL clue has been released on October 8. You can use the MKAL image from the Ravelry pattern page or a picture of your yarn or even a photo of your favorite cat.
