Designed as cathedrals of old, Cathedral Trousers emphasize verticality to the utmost. These high-waisted bell bottoms are knit sideways to allow for vertical striping and vaulted designs that recall gothic archways and stained glass windows of yore. The striping can be achieved through color-changing yarn, or through multiple skeins of different colored yarn, which also makes this pattern well-suited to using up scrap yarn. Stitches are provisionally cast on to allow the seams to be grafted together with kitchener’s stitch. Short rows are used in the shaping, and edges are finished cleanly with an i-cord edge.

Skill level: intermediate - advanced
Techniques: provisional cast on, provisional bind off, short rows (wrap and turn method), i-cord edging, kitchener’s stitch

Gauge: 19sts and 30 rows = 10x10cm blocked

Needles: 3.00 mm circular needle

Cathedral Trousers include 16 sizes, to fit waist 58cm-133cm / 23”-52”

Yarn requirement: 882g - 1353g DK / light worsted wool
I used a Lithuanian wool from yarnhome.com for sample A. For sample B I used a mixture of stash yarn.

Dyeing Notes:
For sample A, I dyed the yarn using acid dyes (Dharma Trading Co. and easter egg dye). If you would like to do something similar, you can dye lengths of color in your yarn that are approximately 3 times the entire desired length of your trousers times the number of rows thick that you want the stripes to be.

I also think this pattern would look amazing in a premade colorchanging yarn that has shorter color repeats - some interesting pooling and striping might occur!
