Last year I had a new gnome square each month (see my eBook: A Year of Gnomes). This gnome could make a good addition or substitution. This listing will contain 3 flag options: USA, Heart/Canada, and blank. And each variation has an interlocking crochet version and an overlay mosaic crochet version. So you will have six squares to choose from.

There are two PDF files in this listing. One file contains all three flag option for the interlocking technique, and the other files contains all three flag options for the overlay mosaic crochet technique.

The USA flag gnome was created for a friend. I am Canadian, but I couldn’t get a maple leaf in the tiny space so I changed it to a heart. Anyone can use a heart flag! And the blank flag is available if you’d rather sew on an applique later.

The interlocking mesh dots and border lines have been removed for the overlay mosaic versions of these patterns. The interlocking chart size is 81 x 81 (a typical 40-window square). The mosaic X-marked charts are 77 x 77 because of the adjustments.
_____

The Locked Filet Mesh (LFM) interlocking crochet method uses only chain spaces and double crochets to create a mesh; two colors are worked alternately which creates the pattern.

Mosaic crochet is single crochet and double crochet stitches. The double crochet stitches cover some of the other color’s single crochet stitches to create the design. My patterns instruct you to cut your yarn at the end of each row. The back is striped but often gives a faint impression of the pattern on the front (sort of like illusion knitting). See an example here.

I have YouTube tutorials available for both crochet methods! Follow this link to get to my YouTube channel and find my other social links.
