The Celtic Cable Saxon Braid Baby Blanket is a mixed pattern of cables of different sizes with a centre pattern of a repeating Saxon braid. The Saxon braid is a common feature and centrepiece of Irish Aran knitting. Irish Aran knitting patterns have a long and rich history, originating in the Aran Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Most commonly seen in sweaters, I have replicated those patterns here in blanket form. This pattern is a re-interpretation of my full-size Chunky Celtic Cable Saxon Braid Blanket pattern in a smaller size.

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate.

SUGGESTED MATERIALS: 4 balls of Bernat Alize Blanket-EZ Yarn (6.4oz, 180g) (Image shown is the colour ‘Country Blue’).

SUGGESTED TOOLS: No needles required (finger knitting). Scissors.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Approximately 36” x 36” (91.5 cm x 91.5 cm).

PLEASE NOTE: This pattern will work with any brand of loop yarn, but keep in mind that the size of the loops, and size of the balls/skeins of each brand is different.

Lion Brand Off-The-Hook, Lion Brand Crayola Off-The-Hook, Red Heart Loop-It, and Bernat Alize Puffy yarns can all be used with this pattern, but will yield a blanket with smaller overall dimensions. You will also need more balls/skeins to complete the pattern as is.
