This knitting pattern is for a right triangle, starting from the narrowest tip. It can be adapted to different sizes. The pattern indicates where each repeat of the cable panel is complete, and you can decide when to knit the closing rows. You can use this pattern to make a triangle neck-scarf or a large shawl.

All instructions are written and there is a chart for the main cable panel (you can use the written instructions without the chart; this is just here in case you prefer charts). The language is English. All my patterns are using Calibri font size 13 in black on white, so they are accessible and easy to read on different screens and when printed. All abbreviations and acronyms are explained in the pattern.

Recommended yarn

This project works well with different kinds of yarns. I designed it using chunky yarn, but one of the test knitters got beautiful results with fingering weight, as you can see in the project photos.

The shawl in the photos is 229 cm (90 inches) wide and about 127 cm (50 inches) tall. I made it with about 900 grams (2 pounds) of DROPS Karisma wool (DK weight) held double. This resulted in a chunky yarn, which I worked using 6 mm needles (US 10.5 / UK 3). Total yardage of this yarn held double: 900 metres (980 yards); this means 2x900 metres of DK yarn.

If you use lower weight yarn (such as DK) you will need to knit more repeats of the cable panel to reach the same size of shawl.

Needles

Knitting needles corresponding to the weight of your yarn.

Work flat on circular needles. I recommend long ones (120-150 cm / 47-59 in) if you want to knit a large shawl, as you will have many stitches on the needles towards the end.

Cable needle one size smaller than the knitting needles.

Tapestry needle to bind off (optional)

Gauge: This depends on the weight of the yarn you choose. The shawl in the photos has a gauge of 13 stitches / 10 cm (4 in)

Check your gauge by knitting a swatch of the first 25-30 rows of the pattern. Change the needle size if necessary (larger needles = bigger gauge and vice-versa). Gauge is not very important, unless you are aiming for an exact size.

Stitches used

  • Knit, purl
  • 3 types of increases
  • different cables of 3 and 4 stitches All increases and cables are explained in detail.

A button can be added (I included instructions for a one-row buttonhole) but it can also be left without.

If you like my shawls, you can get all 3 of them for the price of 2. See the bundle here: https://www.ravelry.com/bundles/shawls-478070
