The Charming Ewe Halter Top is the perfect design to use those random single skeins in your stash. My friends & I meet up annually at DFW Fiber Fest to really bask in all the yarn fumes at the marketplace. Maybe you’re like me & find yourself wanting to support as many makers at these festivals as possible, but don’t have the budget to invest in sweater quantities or simply get overwhelmed by all the options so you space out & buy some hank that you thought was pretty only to have it sit in your stash because it’s not enough yardage to be anything substantial. Although crochet is traditionally known to eat up yardage, the airy lace pattern of this halter top allows the yardage to stretch for all sizes, making it more possible to have a wearable from one single skein, which also makes it an even quicker make.

In 2024, I waited too long to decide on my purchases that by the time I made it to the Charming Ewe’s booth, there was one solo pink skein on a stellina base. It was meant to be as Maureen so generously gifted it to me. Not only are her colors so bright & vibrant, but she’s also clearly skilled on properly dye-ing to allow the stellina to shine.

As 2025, DFW Fiber Fest’s 20th anniversary, approaches, I knew I wanted to work this skein up to bring it back full circle & wear it into Charming Ewe’s booth. And so, this halter top was born on July 22, 2025 when I finally allowed myself to let the inspiration become reality.

  • Notes are added within pattern to customize specific sections to your body measurements. Making modification will affect yardage estimates.

  • Halter is designed starting with the neckband, continuing to work the front panel, then adding a back strip directly to the opposite side of neckband, followed by working the body in the round to join all the pieces & ending with the bottom hem edging.

  • This top is designed with 12” of negative ease. Amount of negative ease will depend on where you fall within the size range: model is 5’3” with 36” bust, wearing size M.

  • Testers used various weights of yarn that worked out due to customization notes & lace being so forgiving. Keep in mind: modifications will affect yardage & ease estimates.
