The core of the shawl is an adaptation of a quilt block called Virginia Reel. The Virginia Reel block uses a small square center surrounded by successively larger layers of equilateral triangles. Because equilateral triangles are used the result does not provide an optical illusion. However, by using scalene triangles (30-60-90 approximately) the cognitive illusion of a whirlpool spiral is created.

Materials:
Cloudborn Fibers, Merino Superwash Sock-Twist (80% Superwash Merino Wool, 20% Nylon). This is a fingering weight yarn. This pattern is scalable to other weights of yarn. To assist with estimating the amount of yarn, information is included.

The pattern is written for 14 colors. It is possible to work this with as few as two colors; alternating colors for each layer. In the pictured sample, the center and the first five layers (colors A through E) were worked using mini skeins that had approximately 115 yards per mini skein. For the rest of the colors were worked from full skeins that were 467 yards /427 meters. Approximately half of these skeins was used.

This shawl is worked from the center to the outside. At the beginning it is suggested to use a set of 5 dpns, then change to a circular needle when the number of stitches grows.

It is worked in garter stitch and uses short rows.
