Here is an urn shaped basket (wider in the middle) inspired by rainbows and mandalas. I wanted to create a basket pattern that utilizes stitches of different heights, shapes and colors for pattern effect, much the way a mandala does, but in a three dimensional shape rather than a flat piece. What resulted was this petite basket whose unusual shape and unique combinations of colors and stitches creates endless interest. It’s a fun pattern and works up fairly quickly.

The finished size is about 6” across at the widest part and about 5” high.

Skill Level This pattern utilizes many different stitches. It is probably a good pattern for an advanced beginner who has some familiarity with how to combine different stitches, work in the round, and is ready for a challenge. For the most part, the stitches are simply combinations of basic stitches – SS, SC, HDC, DC. Concentration and counting stitches is the most important ingredient for success with this type of crochet.

To make the basket shown, you will need the following:
Materials:

G Hook (4.25 MM) Note on gauge and hook size: Gauge is not that important for a basket, although you do not want large holes between your stitches. I used a G hook because I crochet rather loosely, so I almost always go down one size to obtain gauge when I follow directions. If you crochet pretty tightly or if you usually obtain gauge with the hook suggested in a pattern, then you might want to use an H hook. For the single crochet rounds for the basket base, my gauge was 4 stitches and 3 rows of SC equal about 1”. Gauge will vary on the different stitches used in each row but the pattern and stitch count adjusts accordingly.

1 skein each of Red Heart Super Saver in the following 7 colors:

Buff
Gold
Tea Leaf (Green)
Cherry Red
Blue Suede
Carrot
Medium Purple

Note on yardage: Seven skeins of this yarn are more than enough to make several baskets If you use another brand of worsted weight yarn or leftover yarn from your stash, I’d estimate about 25 yards of each color.

Tapestry Needle (for weaving in ends)
