This is a simple washcloth or dishcloth pattern that is a great first project for new knitters and makes a lovely gift.

Gauge is not important for this project.

Use any yarn you like and appropriate sized needles.

Cotton yarn is perfect for washcloths and dishcloths, but worked in a wool yarn on large needles and felted, would make a wonderful hot pad.

This is a great project for beginners. I use it in my continental knitting class as a good project for getting familiar with a new style of knitting, because it contains a nice balance of knit and purl stitches.
