Thermal crochet creates a double layered wind resistant fabric that is perfect for cold Northern winters. Because the mittens are made from real wool, they will be warm when wet.

The ribbing was created with back loop slip stitch to create a thick and extremely stretchy ribbing that would keep the mitten in place, while playing in the snow for hours at a time. It also has a very neat edge, so there are no holes between the ribbing and the lower mitten. This kind of ribbing actually look very much like knitting.

The square shape was designed to minimize and spread out decreases, to maximize structural integrity throughout the mitten without puckering the double thick fabric.

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS:
4-9 safety pin type stitch markers to mark the end of rows and help you count while making the ribbing 2 easily moved stitch markers. I use bobby pins.

ABBREVIATIONS:

SLST: Slip stitch

BL SLST: Slip stitch in back loop only. Insert the hook from the front to the back with the yarn in back, as usual. Turn without chaining. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TuOa_Htpt4

CH: Chain.

INC SLST: Work 1 slip stitch. Place the hook back in the same loop and in the next loop. Yarn over and pull
thoughall loops. Work a third slip stitch in the same loop that was used for the increase. This will double every other stitch.

BL SC: Single crochet in the back loop only.

FL THSC: Place the hook up through the unused FL of the last round and the FL at the top of the round on the outside of the mitten. Yarn over and work a SC stitch as usual. The unused BL will provide the foundation loop for the next round. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu2GzJHCgwE (This video does not show making the stitch in the round. It needs to be modified a bit to work in a continuous round spiral but hopefully this will give you a bit of an idea.

BL THSC: Place your hook down through the BL at the top of the round and the unused BL from the previous round. Yarn over and work a SC as usual. The unused FL will provide the foundation loop for the next round.
