A hug in knitted form. Brioche may just be the squishiest, drapiest stitch ever so when combined with chunky weight yarn, it makes for a knit that’s as cosy as it is comfortable.

Yarn: Chunky/bulky weight yarn, 916 (1012: 1080: 1183: 1268) (1363: 1459: 1558: 1658) m, 1004 (1109: 1183: 1296: 1390) 1493: 1598: 1707: 1816 yards. Shown in Rowan Cocoon in shade 263 ‘Scree’. If using this yarn, you will need 8 (9: 9: 10: 11) (12: 13: 13: 14)balls.

Needles and notions: 8mm circular needle, ideally of 80cm or longer for working long rows, plus 8mm long DPNs or 100cm circular needle (for magic loop) for sleeves. 6mm needles for belt (either circular or DPNS, whichever you prefer for working very short rows). Optional 10mm needle for binding off extra loosely.
You will also need a tapestry needle to sew the shoulder seams and weave in ends, and scrap yarn for holding stitches.

Gauge: 9.5 stitches and 26.5 rows per 4”/10cm in brioche stitch on 8mm needles, blocked. Pattern includes notes for swatching brioche stitch, along with notes on brioche stitch counts, row counts, bind offs and shaping and how they differ from regular knitting.

Sizing: 1 (2: 3: 4: 5) (6: 7: 8: 9) detailed below. Finished cross back measurement is given instead of a bust circumference as the cardigan is open at the front. Sample shown is a size 2 worn on a 34” bust with around 10 inches of positive. The ‘to fit bust’ measurement is purely a guide: choose a size based on the amount of ease you’d like the finished garment to have, bearing in mind it can be wrapped as loosely or tightly as you’d like.
To fit bust:
28-30 (32-34: 36-38: 40-42: 44-46) (48-50: 52-54: 56-58: 60-62)“
71-76 (81-86: 91-97: 102-107: 112-117) (122-127: 132-137: 142-147: 152-157) cm
Finished cross back width:
20 (22: 24: 26.5: 28.5) (30.5: 32.5: 34.5: 36.5)”
51 (56: 61: 67: 72) (77: 83: 88: 93) cm

NOTES
This pattern uses brioche stitch both flat and in the round, brioche stitch increases and decreases, mattress stitch seaming, picking up stitches, and an i-cord bind off.
Construction: The body is worked in one piece from the hem to the armhole, then split for the fronts and back to be worked separately. The shoulders are then seamed together, and stitches are picked up around the armholes for the sleeves to be worked from the top down. Finally, stitches are picked up around the front edge and along the hem and finished with an i-cord bind off. The belt is worked separately on smaller needles for a firmer fabric.
