This pattern is for an overlay mosaic crochet square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, satchel bags, table mats, etc.

Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square, as long as all the yarn colors are the same weight type of yarn. I used yarn weight type of 4 (worsted/aran) with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”.

You will need at least 2 colors of yarn - one for the background and one for the Gingerbread Man. The image has a 3rd color of Red for the border & buttons, as well as a small amount of white for the details, but is optional. You could also use variegated yarn for the background, or use 2-3 colors of yarn to create a striped or gradient background.

The white mouth was stitched during the background rows but a light background color would work as well. The white details are embroidered onto the finished square.

This is a great way to use up scraps! For projects using 2 colors, (one for the background & one for the featured design), you will need approximately 2 oz of each color for a worsted or aran (wt 4) type of yarn. If you want to add red for the border & buttons (or another optional 3rd color) you will need around 1 oz as it is crocheted into the entire rows that use the brown color, and just a few yards of white yarn for the embroidered details.

Pattern is in US crochet terms.
