The hats that are a little slouchier are made with size I (5.5 mm) hooks and the ones that stand straighter are made with size H (5 mm) hooks

Christmas Tree Hat
This pattern makes a stocking cap type hat in the shape of a Christmas tree, with branches that stick out from the base of the hat.
This pattern is really easy to customize size. Simply make the brim as long as needed, and then follow the pattern with that number of rows. There isn’t a specific number of rows needed. The brim is also pretty stretchy, so keep that in mind.
I didn’t figure out a gauge, but I liked how the hat lay with using the size I (5.5 mm) hook more than the size H (5 mm). The 5mm it tends to stand up on its own more and the 5.5mm it’s a little more slouchy, which is what I liked more.
I used I Love This Yarn in Forest and I also got Christmas buttons from Hobby Lobby to sew on as decorations for the tree. I also used DMC 319 thread to sew on the button decorations. I used a yarn needle to make the finishes for the hat itself.
The kids hats used just under a skein of yarn and the adult sizes used just over one skein of yarn for each hat.
