Make an adorable mushroom hat with this crochet pattern! Please note, when making the band it seems very small at first, but please finish the band entirely before trying on, it stretches a lot!

Pattern level: advanced (or ambitious) beginner. Must be comfortable sewing on small pieces and working in the round.

Sizes included: one size, fits nearly all teens & adults

Materials needed:

  • worsted (weight 4) yarn (two strands held together). You can try a single strand of super bulky (weight 6) but it might come out bigger, so you might have to make adjustments.
  • 4mm and 9mm hooks
  • yarn needle

How to adjust the band
**********************************************

After your initial chain of 39, it will seem too small! But the chain stretches out a TON after the first couple of rows. Complete the entire band before trying it on.

The fit needs to be quite snug, because the hat itself is fairly heavy. But of course it shouldn’t be so tight it gives you a headache!

Depending on the weight of your yarn (might be slightly skinner or fatter than mine), and your tension, it might still be too small. Many people crochet very tightly, you should try to loosen up, it’s much better for your body!!

To make it bigger, add multiples of 3 to your starting chain. Estimate, based on the fit, how many you need to add, then remake the band with that number of chains.

This means you will have uneven row repeats for the mushroom cap part of the hat, however this won’t affect the look, so don’t worry about it! Just follow the pattern as written.

If the band is too loose, do the same thing, but opposite: subtract chains in multiples of 3.

Hope this helps!
