Summary
Create a beautiful chunky basket using natural cotton rope, perfect for storage and display in a bedroom or bathroom. The pattern includes full written and photo instructions for both right and left handed crocheters - covering how to craft the base and sides and how to add integrated handles. The coarseness of the material creates a rigid basket that keeps its shape, even when empty. This “medium” basket is approx 27 cm in diameter and 18 cm high. Instructions are provided for adjusting the pattern to make smaller or larger baskets. These sizes will nest inside each other.

The baskets shown on the front of the pattern, and on this website are nested small and medium baskets, but have 1 extra row on the sides to make them 3cm taller than the basic pattern.

Materials
This basket uses 6mm cotton macrame cord or upholstery piping cord. I used a 100% cotton twisted rope rather than the woven wrapped variety. This rope/cord is typically sold by weight, and the Medium sized basket pattern (18 cm tall version) uses a full 1kg roll (approx 130m). It is usually better value to buy a whole roll rather than order by the metre. Shop around as prices can vary dramatically. You should be able to find a 1kg roll for < £15.00 in the UK.

The yardage in 1kg may vary with supplier so keep a firm tension to ensure you get the biggest basket you can. A looser tension or lower yardage will result in a basket that is 1 row (3 cm) shorter (15 cm high).

It is best to use a plain aluminium hook with no added handle. Plastic hooks can bend when pulling the rope through.

Skills
This pattern is worked in the round and suitable for anyone who has basic crochet skills. You should be able to crochet UK doubles and trebles (US singles and doubles).

Please Note:
Crocheting rope can be quite physical as the coarse material is crocheted quite tightly to give structure to the finished product. This pattern is not suitable for those with any weakness in their arm, hand or wrist.
