Cinnamon & Bourbon Mitts
Use the code CB for 20% off these mitts until next Saturday 12/13/25 at midnight EST. If you’ll be in Brooklyn this Saturday 12/6/25, stop into Brooklyn General Store between noon and 6pm for Farm Day. Tammy of Wing & A Prayer Farm will be there with beautiful kits in a variety of colors for this pattern!
The fun motif from my Cinnamon and Bourbon sweater leans itself beautifully into a smaller accessory pattern. The color options are endless, the swirly bits are absolute potato-chip knitting, and the eye-catching texture is a perfect pop against any winter coat you may have.
I leaned into the slip-stitch swirls from the original sweater, using the stripes as an accent here. Doing so allowed me to size these as needed, plus it kept the fit around the hand constant and put that texture front and center.
The mitts are worked mostly in the round from the wrist upwards. To maintain the background color across the thumb, there are two rows worked flat during your gusset. Shaping is added at wrist and upper hand for a good fit, and notes are included in the pattern on modifying the depth of either your lower or upper hand and for altering the circumference around your mitts as needed.
I used a combination of yarns from both Wing & A Prayer Farm and Sawkill Farm for my samples, pairing various colors from my stash. Have a little fun with yours! See my notes below on the properties your background yarn needs to have, pick your options, and see what you come up with! This is a great pattern for leftovers or an excuse to try a couple skeins of yarn from a fantastic small farm.
Sizing:
7.5(8.25)”/19(21)cm around hand.
Mitten length: 10.5”/26.75cm.
Mitt length: 9.5”/24.25cm.
Length above reflects cast on at wrist to end at top of mitt.
Sizes are based on final, blocked fabric.
Notes are included in pattern on adjustments to length or circumference around hand.
Yardage Needed and Yarn Notes
150(175)yds/140(160)m of Background Color
50yds/45m of Accent Color
Yardage was increased once testers updated their final numbers. My mitts in the recommended yarn used a little less, but I would rather err on the side of caution!
Background Yarn Notes
This should be a round, bouncy fiber with some memory that will maintain shape and wear well over time. A round sport or DK weight fiber with a high wool content will work best here for warmth, fit, and function.
I used the Sawkill Farm Sport as background in my sample mitts. As a Wing & A Prayer Farm background option, Tammy has made kits with The Happiest Yarn Sport, a 2-ply Shetland that will work beautifully.
Accent Yarn Notes This can be a little more fun and does not need to have the bounce or memory of the background, although it should knit to the same gauge and should not be something that will break easily or pill with use.
Yarn used in the samples shown: Green mitts: Sawkill Farm Sport in Fern and Wing & A Prayer Thelma and Louise in Pale Green; Lavender mittens: Sawkill Farm Sport in Lavender and Wing & A Prayer Thelma and Louise in Pale Green; Dark purple mittens: Sawkill Farm Sport in Mauve and Squashed Peach colorways.
