The Medici gardens at Castello and Boboli were extraordinary works of art and botany. As citrus curators the Medici’s collected some of the most curious specimens. Some showed the shape and colors of multiple species: bizzarrie as the Italians called them. These chimera citrus inspired all sorts of art from paintings to wax and plaster replicas. So beloved were the citrus plants, that there were special buildings called limonaie constructed for their survival during the winter months.
