This is not your traditional pattern where you go down, pick a size, and follow the specific directions for that one size. No, this pattern is written to teach you how to create a beanie based on your crochet style and sizing needs. Everyone crochets differently. Personally, I have found patterns that require you to meet a certain gauge difficult to do since I tend to crochet tightly. Because of this, I wanted to create a pattern for all crocheters that adapts to your personal crochet style, your personal choice of yarn, and your skill level to give you a nicely textured beanie to wear and enjoy.
There is no specific yarn that you need to use for this pattern. This pattern was tested using DK/3, Worsted/4, Bulky/5, and Super Bulky/6 weight yarns. I personally have used both a worsted/4 weight and a bulky/5 weight yarn. For the worsted weight, I used I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby with a 5.5mm hook. For the bulky weight, I used the discontinued Yarn Bee Alpine Authentic from my stash and a 6mm hook. The hook size you choose will depend on your level of comfort, tightness or stitching, and weight of yarn used. Since I tend to crochet on the tighter side, I have a habit of using larger hooks than some others might choose. Use the hook size you are comfortable with to get a nice look and feel to your stitches.
