11.2019 Note: I have clarified the verbiage in my own pattern download (available here on Ravelry and on my website) from the over-edited (and confusing) version in Interweave Knits.

“This Gansey Cardigan is worked flat (back and forth) for the entire body, but circularly for the sleeves. The neckband and button bands are picked up. The neck, cuffs, and bottom feature rolled edges. Underarm gussets add freedom of movement to the garment-- and they’re fun to knit too! In the Gansey tradition, most of the motifs are knit/purl combinations, with a couple of cables thrown in.”
