The Classic Smocking Cardigan is worked bottom-up. At the top, short rows are worked to shape the neck opening. The body is worked back and forth while the sleeves are knit in the round on double pointed needles or with the magic loop method. Lastly, sts are picked along the front edges and button bands are worked.

Suggested needles: 4 mm (US size 6) and 4.5 mm (US size 7) circular needles, 80 - 100 and 120 cm (32 - 40 inches and 48 inches); 4 mm and 4.5 mm double pointed needles (if the sleeves are not worked using the magic loop method); or the necessary needle size to obtain gauge
