Combining textured stitches and familiar embroidered floral details, this 1950s cardigan design takes Tyrolean style into the new post-war decade. The softer shoulders, longer line and slim fit give a very different silhouette from the square shoulder line and shorter garments of the previous years. From the 1930s onwards, Copley’s published many of the most attractive Tyrolean patterns available, always capturing the essence of the style, beautifully adapted to the fashion of the day.

This cabled Tyrolean cardigan dates from around 1952 and has incorporated some clever placing of fine cables to create the spaces for embroidered flowers. The delicate powder blue used for the main colour is a subtle alternative to the traditional cream background, and has been matched as closely as possible in the recreated version for this collection. The original pattern embroidered across both sets of the smaller panels, repeating the same floral motif all around.

Materials
The recreated model was knitted using Susan Crawford Fenella 100% wool in pale blue colour ‘Porcelana’, as close to the original as possible. Labelled as a 2 ply yarn, it is very close in weight to vintage 3 ply (which is recommended in the original pattern) to result in a 34” size. Please see book for suggested alternatives and for a larger size.
