Cobblestone Lane combines intermediate-level lace with sections of stockinette stitch for an engaging knit that results in a beautiful shawl.

The inspiration -
London, September 1893
You turn off a busy avenue, bustling with trams and horse carriages, onto a quiet cobblestone side street. Afternoon light glints off the paneled windows of gracious row houses and soaks into the jewel tones of a church’s stained glass. You can see dappled sunlight filtering through the trees that shade a leafy park at the end of the block. You walk towards the park’s gazebo, nearing the end of its season as a tea house. The summer heat has lifted and there is a hint of autumn in the air. Inside your market basket, you’ve brought your most intricate lace shawl to pull around you when the sun lowers in the sky; it will give just enough warmth to keep off the evening breeze, and you know your friend will admire your handiwork and the beautiful yarn. The thought of a cup of tea and a scone with your friend brings a smile to your face. You spot her walking towards you and wave.

This pattern has been thoughtfully prepared with helpful tips and links to foster success. It’s been tech edited and test knitted to ensure a smooth, error-free knitting experience so you can embrace the stitches with confidence.

Lace stitches are both fully written out and charted.

Size
Approximately 60”/150 cm inside edge, 96”/240 cm outside edge, 18”/45 cm depth, after blocking.

Gauge/Tension
24 stitches and 28 rows to 4”/ 10 cm in stockinette stitch, unblocked. Getting exact gauge is not tremendously important, but if your gauge differs, the finished size and yarn usage may vary.

Supplies
Yarn: Two colors of fingering/sock yarn: Approximately 95 grams/416 yds/ 380 meters color 1 (teal in sample) and approximately 40 grams/170 yards/ 155 meters color 2 (variegated in sample). The sample was made with Megs & Co. Illumination, a 70% Merino wool/30% silk blend with 438 yards/401 meters per 3.5 ounce/ 100-gram hank, in colors are Siren and Crystal River Salmon Run. Other wool or wool-blend yarns would also work well for this design.

Needles: US 6/4.0 mm or size needed to obtain gauge. The shawl is worked flat. It is possible to knit the shawl entirely on straight needles, but it will be more comfortable to use a long circular needle so that the stitches can spread out as the shawl grows. The sample was worked on a 40”/ 100 cm needle.
