The Cocoon and Butterfly Jacket was designed by Trish as a way to make stockinette stitch shawls without fringe! They are basically rectangles with the ends folded up to form sleeves, but they’re actually much more than that. Think of them as a shawl that just doesn’t ever fall off. And, there are no corners to get in your way. They can be worn as pictured, or tied or pinned in front, or even belted. The Butterfly Jacket is completey reversible, giving you two totally different looks. I’ve even seen people wear them upside down with the long tail folded over like a shawl collar - the possibilites are endless!

They can be done either all in stockinette (the Butterfly Jacket) or with ribbed cuffs and a garter stitch band all around the edge (the Cocoon). Both variations are included in the pattern. Either garment can be knit with almost any yarn - thinner yarns will stretch more, making the garment longer and narrower, thicker yarns will hold their shape more, making the garment shorter and fuller around.

Although the pattern is written in one size, adjustments to width can be made by knitting fewer or more inches, adjustments to length can be done by changing needle sizes. Instructions for doing so are included.

Approximate yardage is 950 to 1,100 yards, with thinner yarns taking more yardage, thicker yarns less. Approximate gauge is 3-1/2 sts per inch, although this isn’t important! Recommended needle size is US 10-1/2 (6.5mm)

The pattern includes detailed instructions on finishing your garment, with step-by-step diagrams.
