You know that feeling when you discover a stitch pattern so beautiful you just can’t stop thinking about it? That’s exactly what happened with the Color Crush stitch. After designing the Color Crush Shawl, I kept coming back to that meditative slipped-stitch repeat.

The way the colors play off each other, the way it creates this gorgeous woven texture without actually weaving anything … I knew it needed a second life. Something a little quicker, a little cozier, something you could wear right on your head for everyone to see.

So … the Color Crush Hat was born.

Whether you knit it in DK weight with two striking contrasting colors or go bold with fingering weight and use multiple colors at once, this hat is made to show off the colors you love most.

It’s the perfect canvas for that colorway you’ve been hoarding, those mini skeins you can’t bear to use on anything ordinary, or that color combo you’ve been dreaming about for months.

The Color Crush stitch works in the round beautifully, with only one color worked at a time, so it’s much more beginner-friendly than it looks. (Yes, really!)

A soft tubular cast-on gives you the most professional, stretchy, comfortable brim you’ve ever made.

This hat is the kind of knit that makes people stop you on the street. And when they ask, “Did you make that?” … you’ll get to say yes!

• 21 sts x 28 rnds = 4”/10 cm in Stockinette Stitch, after wet blocking.
