Lines of surface crochet follow the path of waving cables to add bursts of color and texture to this asymmetrical triangular shawl. The possibilities for playing with color and design are endless!

This shawl is knit in the main color from one tip to the opposite edge with a series of cabled columns zigzagging back and forth across the fabric. Afterward, knitters may choose to add lines of contrasting color(s) using surface crochet, which accent the purl columns within the cabled zigzags.

Surface crochet does not require much crocheting experience. If you can crochet a chain stitch, then you can easily add these lines to your knitting. There is a photo tutorial demonstrating how to add surface crochet at the end of the pattern.

This pattern offers a great opportunity for experimentation with color and effect when adding the surface crochet. Knitters may choose to add a single contrasting color, two colors, or even a rainbow of colors. One can work a central line of surface crochet within each waving column, every other column, or a random selection, and then perhaps add additional lines of crochet along the other purl columns. How much or how little surface crochet to use is entirely up to you!

Note: The pattern instructions are both written and charted.
