This pattern uses the Little Fountain Stitch. It’s supposed to look like a water fountain’s upward shooting jets. But it reminds me of the Star Trek Communicator, which is why I named it “Communicator Cowl”.

I was required to come up with a pattern for an event in which we were participating and I wanted something that could be easily made with one skein of Sulka Legatto and with a repeat the I found easy to memorize and to read my stitches so that when I would put it down to do something else then have to come back to it later, I could figure out where I was in the pattern.

The cowl is knit in the round on circular needles.

The finished piece is about 12.5” x 8.5” (laying flat). I knit tight. The test knitter’s piece worked up a bit larger, by about 1 1/2” total. Gauge isn’t crucial, as long as it’s relatively close and will fit over your head. ;) If you want to make it larger, the Little Fountain Stitch works in repeats of 4 + 1.
