Number 8 in my A Single Candle series, Compassion is something we all need to show one another. This design started out a bit differently from the earlier ones. While researching quotations for some of the first pieces, I came across a quote from Prince that was perfect: Compassion is an action word with no boundaries.
Then, while researching ideas for the design, which I knew would be a shawl, one of the colors associated with compassion is purple. Well, that became a no-brainer! And even better, when Freia Fibers launched the color Iris this past spring, I thought how perfect could that be? Later as I was knitting the shawl, the way the leaf motifs were lining up along the edge reminded me of feathers. That made me think of the song Wind Beneath My Wings. The whole idea seemed to have come full circle!
The shawl begins with the lace border with decreases worked at each end to shape the edges. Once the border is finished the section worked above it is a knit/purl texture pattern using German Short-Rows to shape the shawl. All the while, slipped stitches at each end of the row add a neat edge to the work.
Finished Measurements after blocking: 56 1/2” /143.5 cm wide and 16” / 40.5 cm long at the center.
I used almost the entire cake of yarn, so 1 cake of 456 yds / 416 meters should be enough to make this shawl.
