Conscientia, is the latin word for awareness. This shawl depicts the so called “angel” and the “devil” sitting on our shoulders trying to pull you in one direction or another in every decision, and our net that we weave with every decision that is made by us in the center. We have all made some good and bad decisions in our past and we will continue to make more of them in the future, and that’s fine, we are only human. But it’s what we have learned from them, that help shape us into better version of ourselves. Looking back, I personally notice that no matter how bad (or stupid) my decisions have been, there has always been and equal (more or less) and opposite reaction, this shows me I have learned and changed and adapted for the better. This shawl is to represent the balance of our lives, and to remind you no matter how in a rut any of us may feel at any given moment, there will be better days in the future. A little reflection piece that I have made, and I hope gets you though what ever is troubling you these days, and gives you warm hugs when ever you wear it.

Sizes: 74” x 24” / 190.5 cm x 61cm
(size will also vary on the yarn weight of your choice and the amount of tension of your blocking)

Yarn: Lace / Light FingeringYarn-
700 m (765 yards) approx; of each MC color
Total: 1400m (1530 yards)

Sample Yarn: Apricate Interspersis Yarn
(50% Superwash Merino Wool & 70% Silk,
Heavy Lace / Light Fingering Weight - 700m/100g)

Feel free to experiment and substitute with the yarn of your choosing of equal or lesser weight. Silk blends are recommended because they are sturdier when blocking, but just be mindful of the tension you use while wet blocking. Yarn weight can be anything that is 700m (765 yards) per 100g or more, which equivalates to thinner yarn. I don’t recommend going thicker than this because you will be holding 2 strands together in the middle.

Suggested Needles: US 5 - 4.0 mm circular needles

Gauge: gauge is not important on this design and does depend on many factors, but for the sake of curiosity mine was 4.5” x 8” for one LC2 pattern repeat

Materials: yarn of your choosing, knitting needles, stitch markers (5), darning needle, blocking pins & mat (optional blocking wires & towel for drying before blocking)

Skills: knit, purl, yo, knitting through back loop, wrapping yarn twice around needle, decrease (k2tog, k2togtbl), back loop cast on, reading lace charts, suspended bind off, wet blocking.

Construction: Conscientia Shawl is worked back and forth in MC1 for 1 pattern repeat then you cast on the additional stitches in MC2 and commence the 2 stands held together for the intersecting portion. This continues in this manner for the entire body of the shawl. Ending with binding of of MC1 and the last pattern repeat in MC2. Pattern notes are given on how to calculate the way to use the maximum amount of your yarn and how to use life lines in your knitting in case you are not sure of your self and your skill level.
