Coorie In Cowl
In Scotland, to “coorie in” means to snuggle up and get cosy! This cowl is knitted in the round using a deceptively simple two-colour slip stitch pattern, an then folded inside itself to create an extra cosy double-thickness fabric to coorie in to. The pattern includes two sizes (Small and Large), with a finished circumference of 28 (36) inches and a finished depth of 10 (9) inches.
The cowl uses one skein each of two different colours of Old Maiden Aunt Uist Wool Sith DK (or another lofty, woolly DK yarn); samples shown use “clachan sands” for colour A and “an cuan canach” for colour B (small size; left in main photo), and “crotal buidhe” for colour A and “an cuan canach” for colour B (large size; right in main photo).
Skills required include the knit stitch, slipping stitches, and working in the round. There is an option to use a provisional cast on and either grafting or a three-needle bind off to finish; alternatively you can simply cast on and cast off as usual and sew the two ends together as you can easily hide the seam on the inner layer of fabric.
Notions required include 5mm circular needles (or the size that you need to get the correct gauge) with a 60cm (80cm) cable, a locking stitch marker or safety pin, a second stitch marker to mark the start of your round, and waste yarn if doing the optional provisional cast on.
