Skills Needed: Cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, knit with two colors

At the very tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, you’ll find Copper Harbor. There’s no cell phone coverage there, unless you head to the “phone booth,” the top of Brockway Mountain Drive, where in addition to maybe getting a bar or two of service, on a clear day you can see Isle Royal and be treated to one of the most majestic views of Lake Superior I’ve ever seen.

There aren’t many year round residents, but the people you meet are warm and friendly, and couldn’t care less that your cell phone doesn’t work. Once unplugged, the biking and hiking trails, kayak tours, Fort Wilkins, and the state park will have you wondering why you didn’t take time for yourself sooner. You might even find yourself with time to knit a hat.

The Copper Harbor pattern will remind you of your adventures in the north with a traditional snowflake design, rolling waves of Lake Superior, and rings of pine trees. Who needs a t-shirt when you can knit your souvenir? The chart requires a little bit of attention, but not too much that it will undo all of the relaxation that vacation will provide. If you can’t make it to Copper Harbor, I suspect the quiet time knitting with a cup of your favorite beverage and a fairly simple knit will provide the same calming effect.
