Copperwing is a shawl all about simple stitches coming together to create something beautiful. This two color triangle shawl pairs fingering weight single ply with stitch defining sock yarn to create a marriage of textures across the fabric.

The shawl begins clean and structured, then gradually shifts as you knit, moving from faux cables into slip stitch texture and finishing with playful faux bobbles along the edge. The combination gives the piece movement and visual interest while still feeling approachable on the needles.

Design Details

The first section features an easy repeating faux cable motif that opens up beautifully after blocking. As the shawl grows, you change colors and textures and transition into an elegant slip stitch pattern.

The final section finishes with faux bobbles along the bottom edge, adding a bit of weight and detail that helps the shawl sit nicely when worn.

Pattern Highlights

  • Two color texture that keeps the knitting interesting
  • Faux cables that are simple to memorize
  • Slip stitch section for contrast and rhythm
  • Faux bobble edging for a finished look
  • A great project for mixing yarns from your stash

Construction Overview

Copperwing is a two color triangle shawl that begins with an i-cord cast on. Symmetrical increases are worked along each edge and on both sides of the center stitch to grow the shawl.

The first chart works the faux cable section. In the lower third you change color and texture into the slip stitch pattern. The final chart finishes the shawl with faux bobbles along the bottom edge.

Charts and written instructions are both included.

Yarn Notes

Our sample combines a tonal sock yarn with a soft single ply to emphasize the stitch patterns. The sock yarn brings out the faux cables with clear stitch definition, while the single ply softens the slip stitch inlay and adds contrast.

You can mix similar yarns from your stash. Pairing a smooth yarn with a softer or more textured yarn works especially well and lets the stitch patterns stand out.

Yarn used:
The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers Bear Paw Sock — 70% SW Merino, 20% yak, 10% nylon
The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers Foxy Lady Fingering — 70% SW Merino, 30% silk
