Every baby needs a bright, soft, cheerful little blanket for the pushchair, the car seat, or to put over them when they doze off in the rocker. Later on they can wrap up dollies or teddies or take it with them to grandma’s house.

I like the crochet ripple blankets but I don’t crochet so I worked out a knit version with no lacy bits, just a dynamic pattern like a sine or “cosine” wave. It’s practically reversible if you darn the ends into their own colours neatly. 3 out of 4 rows are knit plain, the 4th row has simple increases and decreases.

I used seven colours and just managed with one ball of each, but use as many or as few as you like. Never mind if a boy or girl is expected - find out what colour is the pram. Be inspired by toys and story books.

Blankets are the baby gift that can’t be outgrown - perfect!
