This 2-color brioche cowl design creates squishy 3-D ovals to keep the warm air trapped near the neck so that you stay toasty in cold weather!

The pattern is written for two colors to create a reversible cowl. The main color (MC) is used to cast on and work a set up row. It is also used for the right side (RS) brioche knit rows and for the bind off. The contrast color (CC) is used for the RS brioche purl rows. However, once completed, either color can be worn as the outside. If a single color cowl is desired, just disregard the MC and CC designations and continue the entire pattern with the same yarn!

Sizes:

There are two sizes - Small/Medium (~18” circumference) and Large (~24” circumference). The S/M should fit most adults close to the neck (but not tight), but choose size L for a larger neck or looser fit. The cowl height is about 6-7” as written.

Materials Needed:

  • Fingering weight yarn: 30 (45) grams MC and 25 (38) grams CC for 2-color cowl - or 55 (85) grams of a single color
  • US size 2.5 (3mm) or size to get a squishy fabric that isn’t too stiff or too holey (If you don’t have 3mm, try 2.75mm.)
  • 3 (4) stitch markers plus 1 locking stitch marker or small stitch holder

This pattern uses 2-color brioche along with 2 and 4-st increases and decreases to create the patterning. Links to video tutorials for the basic brioche stitches, the increases and decreases are provided in the pattern.
