This is an easy to follow crochet balaclava pattern with photos complimenting every step! This pattern is ultra-flexible, with options for multiple sizes and fits. It’s easy to adjust as you go and I have provided notes along the way to help guide you through the sizing.

This pattern is written in US terms.

Materials needed:
3.75 mm crochet hook
130 g (total) of worsted weight 4 yarn (I used Bernat Premium and Craft Smart Value) in four colors (or however many colors you would like to use).

Gauge:
20 st and 14 rows measure 14 x 14 cm (6.5 x 6.5 in) over hdc using a 3.75 mm hook.
Note: I like to use a 3.75 mm hook to achieve a tight weave, and my granny squares measure 14 x 14 cm (6.5 x 6.5 in) when complete. Squares that are 13 x 13 cm or smaller will yield a smaller, more snug-fitting balaclava and squares that are 15 x 15 cm or larger will yield a larger, looser fitting balaclava.

Construction:
Four granny squares will be created and joined together (using single crochet) into a hood. The neck portion and face border are worked in the round using half double crochet, and the shape of these is created using invisible decrease and increase stitches.

Techniques/features used

  • Granny squares
  • Joining of granny squares using single crochet
  • Colorwork (optional)
